GlobalReach Passpoint Supports Mobile World Congress Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) Live Experience

GlobalReach’s Passpoint online-sign- up server (OSU) provided the authentication and provisioning power behind the next-generation Wi-Fi service at Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona.

Our cloud-based technology was used by The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), GSMA and Fira – together with a large number of mobile operators and technology partners, including Cisco, AT&T and Accuris Networks – to build and deliver the seamless Wi-Fi user experience. Customers of the global carriers taking part in Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) Live were asked to set up their devices before the event by downloading the GlobalReach Passpoint OSU profile.

The attendees with compatible phones were then able to securely and automatically connect to the on-site Passpoint network. Mobile World Congress 2017 was attended by more than 108,000 international delegates including mobile industry professionals from 208 countries and territories, along with around 3,500 press and media.

More than 2,300 companies exhibited across nine halls and eleven outdoor spaces at Fira Gran Via and Fira Montjuïc. GlobalReach Technology has been at the center of Passpoint authentication and provisioning developments, and next-generation trials since 2012.

Working with the cities of San Francisco and San Jose, we also created the first large-scale municipal PasspointTM Hotspot 2.0 service, giving millions of visitors and residents to an automatic and secure connection to the cities’ free PasspointTM Hotspot 2.0 Wi-Fi services. 2017 marks the second year that the GlobalReach Passpoint service has been available at Mobile World Congress. Passpoint was first defined in 2012 by the Wi-Fi Alliance and it is expected that the MWC deployment will be the first of a range of major rollouts through 2014 and 2015.
